U.S. Denies Involvement in Lebanon Beeper Explosion
The U.S. State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, stated that the United States was neither involved in nor aware of the beeper explosion that occurred on September 17, 2024, targeting Hezbollah members in Lebanon. Miller emphasized that the U.S. is currently gathering information about the incident.
He added, “I can assure you that the U.S. was not implicated in this, nor were we informed of it in advance.” The explosions have been attributed to Israel by the Islamist movement Hezbollah.
Miller refrained from commenting on widespread suspicions regarding Israeli responsibility, noting the ongoing exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah following a Hamas attack on October 7 in Israeli territory.
These explosions occurred amid discreet U.S. diplomatic efforts to deter a significant Iranian retaliation against Israel for the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh during a visit to Tehran.
Miller reiterated the U.S. message to Iran: “We urge Iran not to exploit any incident to add instability and further escalate tensions in the region.”
A senior U.S. envoy, Amos Hochstein, recently met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials to discourage a large-scale war against Lebanon. Miller stated, “We seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah,” aiming for the safe return of displaced Israelis and Lebanese.
However, Miller indicated that Hezbollah, classified as a terrorist group by the U.S., could be a legitimate target for military operations. “Members of a terrorist organization are legitimate targets for countries to act against,” he affirmed.
