Routh, who was apprehended by Secret Service agents protecting Trump, was charged with illegal possession of firearms. Authorities reported that Routh did not discharge his weapon during the incident.
Trump stated, “The rhetoric is provoking people to shoot at me,” adding that the recent attempt on his life was the result of inflammatory comments from Biden and Harris.
In response, President Biden expressed relief that Trump was unharmed and reaffirmed his condemnation of political violence. Biden emphasized that disputes should be resolved “peacefully at the polls, not with a gun.” He also called for increased support for the Secret Service. Kamala Harris voiced her shock over the incident.
Attorney General Merrick Garland pledged to use “all available resources” to investigate the matter. House Speaker Mike Johnson underscored the need for answers regarding the multiple assassination attempts on Trump.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach County noted that while Trump was not the sitting president, the Secret Service did their job effectively. Routh, who was identified by a witness, was found with an AK-47 rifle, backpacks, and video recording equipment. He faces charges for illegal possession of firearms.
The unusual sequence of events highlights the unprecedented nature of this election campaign, with only 50 days remaining before the November 5 elections.
