New Dominican Arts and Culture Center Coming to NYC

New York’s Dominican community will soon have a dedicated space to celebrate its rich heritage, thanks to a $12.5 million funding commitment announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. This significant investment will establish the Dominican Center for Arts and Culture in the Washington Heights/Inwood area of Manhattan, the first center of its kind in the city.

Governor Hochul praised the contributions of the Dominican community, stating, “New York’s identity is deeply intertwined with our Dominican residents. This new cultural center will honor the history of the Dominican Republic and the vital role that Dominican Americans play in shaping Northern Manhattan.”

The center, managed by the Dominican Studies Institute (DSI) at City College of New York, will feature a museum, exhibition spaces, a theater, a children’s library, and an oral history project. These facilities will serve to preserve and promote the cultural legacy of both the Dominican Republic and the Dominican-American community in New York.

CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez emphasized the importance of this project, saying, “This funding will enable the creation of a center that not only celebrates Dominican culture but also provides a space for future generations to connect with their heritage.”

Congressman Adriano Espaillat highlighted the impact of the Dominican diaspora, particularly in New York City. “The Dominican community has profoundly shaped Northern Manhattan. This cultural center will be a crucial space to recognize and celebrate their contributions,” he said.

Assemblyman Manny De Los Santos expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This center is a landmark achievement for our district. It will offer New Yorkers and visitors alike the opportunity to engage with the rich traditions of the Dominican Republic.”

Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa also underscored the significance of the funding, noting, “The $12.5 million allocated for the Dominican-American Cultural Center is essential for preserving the cultural legacy of the Dominican community, which has played a transformative role in our neighborhoods.”

Próximo Centro Cultural Dominicano en Nueva York

La comunidad dominicana en Nueva York contará pronto con un espacio dedicado a celebrar su rica herencia cultural, gracias a una inversión de $12.5 millones anunciada por la gobernadora Kathy Hochul.
